About Johnsson Ooi

A Penang Craft,
Carried by Hand Since 2004.

Ooi Soon Leong, known professionally as Johnsson Ooi, is a Penang-based handmade pipe artisan whose work sits between craft, design, education, and heritage preservation.

From early self-taught beginnings in Penang to advanced training in Tyrol, Italy, Johnsson’s journey is one of patience, persistence, and respect for material.

This is not work built around speed. It is work built around the hand.

Our Story

The maker is the mark.

Johnsson’s craft began without a grand studio or perfect tools. It began with curiosity.

He studied the material, made mistakes, corrected them, and slowly developed his own understanding of proportion, form, balance, airflow, finish, and hand control.

In 2007, he travelled to Tyrol, Italy, to deepen his training in classical and advanced pipe-making. That experience strengthened his technical foundation and connected his Penang practice to a wider tradition of handcraft.

Today, every JohnssonOSL pipe carries more than material and polish. It carries the journey of its maker: the eye that reads the briar, the hand that understands balance, and the patience to finish properly.

Not as celebrity. As authorship.

Recognition and Responsibility

Recognition matters. Preservation matters more.

Craft is not only about making beautiful objects. Craft is culture, livelihood, education, and identity.

Over the years, Johnsson’s work has travelled through exhibitions, collectors’ hands, commissioned projects, training spaces, and cultural showcases.

The recognition is appreciated, but the real achievement is quieter: returning to the bench, picking up the tools, teaching the next person, and keeping the craft alive.

Craft Philosophy

Craft without record is easily forgotten.

A Johnsson pipe is not only an object. It is a record of decisions — the grain followed, the curve kept, the mistake avoided, the final shape chosen.

This is why meaningful work should be documented. Sketches, process photographs, maker’s marks, finishing details, and workshop records help preserve the origin of each piece. Not to make the craft sound bigger than it is, but because original work deserves to be remembered properly.

Material Knowledge

The block is studied before it is shaped. Grain, density, direction, and character decide what the piece may become.

Human Judgment

The hand does not simply follow a plan. It responds to weight, line, airflow, comfort, and proportion.

Provenance

A meaningful object deserves a clear memory of who made it, how it was made, and why it matters.

Custom Pipe

Made for the owner, not the shelf.

Johnsson often prefers having the customer involved in the workshop while he designs, so the final piece carries something personal from the owner as well as the maker.

Custom Pipe

We design custom-order pipes for personal ownership, meaningful gifts, commemorative occasions, and collector pieces. Names, logos, or marks may be engraved where suitable.

Design and Sketch

Design sketches are prepared for discussion and agreement before work begins. The goal is not to rush approval, but to make the right piece properly.

Quality Guarantee

Custom pieces come with a guarantee certificate. Defects in materials and workmanship are handled with care, and support is available for modification or mouthpiece replacement.
